Manuelito's Legacy

Manuelito signed the treaty in 1868 saying that the Navajos can go back to their homeland, after all those years the population of the Navajos increased.  Manuelito left behind a strong population. He taught his people not to give up. Manuelito got us back to our homeland [Dinetah.] Manuelito was important because he was a persuasive leader. He persuaded from his speeches and his anger he used while talking and signing the treaty.

Manuelito has inspired a lot of Navajo People. There is a school named after Chief Manuelito and a "Chief Manuelito" Scholarship. His Scholarship started in 1980. This was to provide funds for high achieving Navajos students. This scholarship gave them $7,000 per academic year. Just to get this scholarship you have to have over 24 credits with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA.

After Manuelito's death, the Navajo peoples' confidence grew more. Knowing that he taught his people to be good and strong. Manuelito has alot of Navajo people looking up to him. Because he did something that no one could really do like standing up to the Whiteman's Law and Goverment, fighting for his people's freedom. Alot of people can't really do that. Manuelito, we say, is a great leader because he stood up to the anglos! Manuelito didn't back down until he knew his people were safe. The Navajos now are still standing strong from this very day. They learned from the best leaders to stay strong, Manuelito, Barboncito, Narbona, Antonio Sandoval, Zarcillos Largos,
